DBPtv

For those who were part of Mr. Ben's masterfully planned reunion of everybody in the DbP chat room, our glorious leader Jesse mentioned how he would like to have another JesKid's World site where everybody can hang out like the old days. He still owns the domain, but has nobody to design, maintain, and admin the site.

Basically I wanted to start this discussion to see who out there in the DbP community would be willing to work together and make this happen. Mr. Ben showed interest in doing some admin stuff and I have a small background of Photoshop and web design, but we need people who know PHP or ASP templating (something similar to PHPNuke or CMSMS) and can design something like the earlier version.

Toss out your ideas here and what you might like to see on the new version that the old site did not have (or may not have worked as well as it should).

I really hope this works out. I myself and I am pretty sure everyone else really really misses the community and being on chat almost every night with 20 + people.
I would defo be an admin again if Jesse sees it fit.
Anyways if anyone would like to contact me about anything my email is zoso_colossus@yahoo.com
My Windows Live Messenger (msn for you old farts) is zosocolossus@hotmail.com

So I hope to see more people around.
<3 you guys.

I would be willing to be an admin. Also, I have some experience with photoshop and some site design experience (minus the coding).

I'll throw my name in the hat for Admin, did it once before can do it again.

I think they probably need less surface admin types and more straight up coders (ie actual site admin) at this point.. gotta have a ship before you can have a captain

I know some basic html and I'm about to start working on some real web design crap soon. But, god knows when I'll be proficient enough to actually build anything.

If you build it they will come!

let's start brainstorming some ideas on what everybody would like the new site to include. This is what I would like to see:

-Pictures
-personal profiles
-Buddies
-changeable skins
-like/dislike rating system (similar to RvB's mod points)
-message forums
-featured users
-personal blogs
-featured blogs
-front-end news and updates
-downloads/links to Jesse's works (and other people's works from the personal profiles)

Obviously with all those types of features the page would have to be some sort of ASP- or PHP-coded page. I've already begun learning about creating templates that can be used as universal sites (like CMSMS, PHPNuke, or Joomla), and how I can do things like moving modules around like on Facebook. Any other ideas?

Pictures I can assist with. I have picts from a lot of events (public and private) with many of the old Jeschatters and I also have some old pictures from the actual Jeschats :D

I'm not sure about the like/dislike rating system. You can run into problems with that....like all the friggin drama that RvB has with the whole mod point system. Not a bad idea, but it can cause problems with those who take it too seriously and that is not what this community should deal with. RvB showed that the mod system became too much of a focal point of the site and people are still getting upset over one negative mod. It would be better if the new site would leave them off so we don't get the childish uproars from those who take them so seriously.

I think the key is not having negative mods at all - giving people a 1,2,3,4 star rating system instead of a "-1WTF" or "+Cool" is what made that such a disaster.

What would be the difference (or purpose) between this Ning site and another community site?

From what I understood from listening to Jesse talk about it, this site was a fan base for DbP, but he's looking at having a site just for fans of all his works. Sure, there are a lot of people on this site, but not all of them know about Jesse's other works (like SoG for example), and JesKid's World was a place that focused on supporting all of Jesse's endeavors (instead of just one).

However, I'm not sure why we can't use Ning to host it. It would take out a lot of the problematic coding work that nobody seems to be willing to do and already includes a lot of the features people seem to want.

It would be better to do it the Facebook way and just have a "Like" button or another synonym of the word. This would eliminate the focus of "OMG neg modz!" or one person just having a small clique of people putting "cool" or "awesome" on everything. Also, we should not have a top rated system like they do over on www.screattack.com because there are a lot of blogs/journals that are really good but never see the light of day because most people are looking at more popular blog posters and rating them because of the popularity factor.
